Sacred Nature of Marriage (week 3)

Related image
The past few days I have been reading the summary of the ruling that legalized gay marriage. It states the majority's opinion and that of the dissent in the Supreme Courts decision on Overgefell v. Hodges (2015). It is quite long and a little wordy. As I read the majority's opinion I felt great sympathy for the same-sex couples, the petitioners, and could understand their desire to have their relationships validated and legalized and be able to have legal parental rights to their children. I have great compassion for them and their situations. I felt that I agree with and support the majority after reading the first half of the summary, which gives the reasons for the majority's decision.

Then I began to read the dissent. Each of the dissenting judges, Roberts, Scalia, Thomas and Alito, wrote logical, reasoned and compelling arguments. They opened my eyes to what I had not considered before. They each wrote about how the decision took away the rights of States and of the people to decide if they want to allow same-sex marriage to be legalized based on democratic means. This would be through popular vote or through our representative government.

Each of the judges also expressed concern over the effects this could have on religious organizations and people of faith who support traditional marriage.

One point brought up Judge Roberts is that marriage (between man and woman) has been around since the beginning of time. He wrote that it is not a historical coincidence that marriage between men and women arose. It is because of a vital need to conceive children and to ensure they have a father and a mother who are committed to raise them. In order to survive as a human race we must procreate and its best for children to have both a mother and a father who stay together. Marriage is also a religious institution not simply a governmental institution.

Judge Alito expressed a concern that I also share. He wrote on the long term ramifications of legalizing same-sex marriage. No one can know this because there is no precedence. Also that people who do not agree with this ruling will be vilified and be made to speak of it in whispers behind closed doors for fear of being labeled bigots.

I believe the words of the prophet President Nelson. He said in a BYU commencement address August 14, 2014, "God is the Father of all men and women. They are His children. It was He who ordained marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Marriage was not created by human judges or legislators. It was not created by think tanks or by popular vote or by oft-quoted bloggers or by pundits. It was not created by lobbyists. Marriage was created by God!"

I believe in the sacred nature of marriage and in the words of The Family: A Proclamation to the World by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It states, "We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife."

I also believe that we are to love and be kind to all people! Especially those who do not believe or live as we do. God loves all His children the same, equally and without prejudice. We can have different views and still love and respect our family, friends and fellow Americans. I love and adore my oldest daughter. She is married to a woman. They are the sweetest and kindest women you could ever be lucky enough to associate with. They just celebrated their one year anniversary. Also, they are in the process of adopting. I couldn't be more excited to be a grandma again. We love them and love having them in our home. They are a cherished part of our family.

Marriage and Divorce (week 2)

I was saddened by some articles I read this week for a class I am taking on marriage from Brigham Young University Idaho online. The articles were about  divorce and the effects it has on children. Also the diminishing feeling of marriage being important and the best option. I was surprised to hear that it was "middle America" that is having the highest number of divorces and lack of desire to get married and choosing instead to live together.
Elder Oaks mentioned in a talk, in the May 2007 Ensign on divorce, that some refer to their first marriage as a "starter marriage". This attitude seems to be prevalent in society but not as much in temple marriages, I hope. I have watched a friend of mine suffer; whose husband was caught on a dating website and had a few affairs. I thought she was totally justified asking him to move out and considering divorcing him. She recently let him move back in and is working on reconciliation. I struggled with this decision for her. I felt he only was repentant because he got caught. After reading the many articles in this lesson I think this is probably a wise choice for her and her five sons. Especially when Elder Oaks cautions that the remedy is not divorce but repentance, not separation but reformation and the cause isn't incompatibility but selfishness.
My favorite explanation on why we should all care about marriage and it's importance is from State of Our Unions 2012, it says:
"Marriage is not merely a private arrangement; it is also a complex social institution. Marriage helps to unite the needs and desires of couples and the children their unions produce. Because marriage fosters small cooperative unions—otherwise known as stable families—it not only enables children to thrive, but also shores up communities, helping family members to succeed during good times and to weather the bad times."

The Family....what I believe...

"THE FAMILY is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities."-Proclamation to the World

Temples

"In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally."
-Proclamation to the World
We were able to take our family with the youth to see the Payson temple open house! Brayden, who was at BYU, met us there. It is absolutely beautiful. The young women have raved about it ever since and many want to get married there. I was struck how silent it became in the celestial room. Even though many did not know the significance of the room they felt the spirit there. We live in a time where we get to witness God's miracles and majesty all around us!

Brooklyn 4th Year Hike

Brooklyn did a back pack 2 night 20 mile hike to Pine Valley  with the 4th year girls. Her pack was overweight but she didn't care (27 pounds). I was pretty nervous for her. The thought of the "potty pack" was enough to scare her to only pee twice up there- HAHAHA- but she loved it. She came back and said she didn't know why everyone said it was so horrible. She said it was fun and the scenery was beautiful. You have to love our happy sunshine girl!

One of our favorite things to do is to spend time together! When we are lucky enough to have all the kids in town then we enjoy have a fun and usually fiesty game of Settlers of Catan! All of them are competitive and it can get loud. And it makes me so happy. This is what heaven feels like.

Learning to drive

Ok so they may be 22 and 18 but neither one of my boys know how to drive a manual transmission vehicle. Lucky for them Brayden married this cutie who owns one and taught them how this week! HA! What an adventure!! Colby was more excited than Brayden. I think Brayden was hoping to remain unknowledgeable so that Heather would have to drive when they were in her car. Its good to have fun and pretty driving instructors (and patient)!
